CarPlay came out in 2019 for the Mazda 3. I had to do two things. 1.Have the most up to date firmware. 2. Buy an adapter from the dealership and install it. I bought some tools on Amazon to take apart the dash. It was very nice easy. They intentionally made this kit to fit the older model cars to upgrade them.

Wireless CarPlay works well with Wi-Fi, not so much with Bluetooth. What I really want is for Mazda to support Wi-Fi-based wireless CarPlay. You can get an adapter for your USB port to add wireless carplay from amazon though and they are not very expensive. Having it built-in is pretty meaningless now.
